AC 1: Mini Set 1

Miniset 1

By Elgel
This is a set of four small, accessible cryptics. Nothing fancy, just easy puzzles for a project.
Note that the Reveal buttons will give explanations on how clues work too (in complete detail for this set).

Variety Cryptic 10: Late Timing

Late Timing

By Elgel
This puzzle has come in late; it's up to you just how late it is.

There is a misprint in 9 of the across clues and 3 of the downs. If you are consistent, the 12 corrected characters in clue order will help explain one of the other clues (which is otherwise unfairly cryptic).

Variety Cryptic 8: Nocturne

Nocturne

By Vera Idil
This puzzle needed extra coding, so it came out later than intended. It is an accidental homage to Stephen Sondheim (inspired by a puzzle that I only just rediscovered was his).

We have here a Nocturne that needs restoring; some vandal has not only nicked all of the letters, they stole the bar lines and scribbled over the clues with their own musical piece, trying to claim it as their own!

For all but 7 of the clues, one of the letters in the clue needs to be changed to undo the vandal's work. In clue order, the corrected letters give lyrics that, when taken with a dress, hint to the rest of this piece's title. The letters as they are now will help identify the vandal.

Clues are given with accurate numbering, but lengths are not given; you must restore the bars (which are not symmetrically placed) and identify the artist's signature (see below for interface instructions.)

For 4 of the 7 unvandalised clues, a letter is omitted by the wordplay. Of the other 3, one exemplifies the subtitle of the piece; the omitted letters and the final 2 answers also do so, in their own way.

Once you've finished, if you wish, you can finish the movement by repositioning the omitted letters in the grid and removing a bar (leaving valid words in all entries).

Press '[' to enter a bar on the left of the current cell; ']' to enter a bar on the right; '-' for above; '=' for below.
Answers can be entered into the box by the clue when their position is unknown.
Limitation: 'Reveal this' when the grid is selected won't correct any bars, it will only show what the highlighted cells should be. When a clue's box is selected, 'Reveal this' will reveal that clue answer, but not where it goes.
