In this puzzle, some things are a little off.

16 of the clue answers, when entered into the grid, will have a clash at a single one of the crossing letters.
All other clues are entered normally, but must have a letter removed from the clue before solving (all such deletions lead to real words).

The letters removed from the clues, in clue order, will give you six words; though, you should read the opposite of these words instead.
Then, resolve the clashes in the grid by replacing the clashing letters with a single one that gives valid words in both directions (these words may include names).
These resolving letters, read row by row from the top, will spell out what you've seen, or what you've been.
